Digital marketing strategy examples that teach more than the theory

Named campaigns from Duolingo, Oatly, Gymshark and others show the channel choices, content formats, proof and economics behind each result.

What to take away

  • Six named campaigns, each run by a real company, each teaching one decision you can copy.
  • Every example names the channel that did the work and the constraint that shaped it.
  • Duolingo's TikTok growth came from a character, not a media budget. Oatly's came from owned controversy.
  • Gymshark built demand through athletes before it bought any. Notion let users publish the ads.

Digital marketing strategy examples earn their keep when they name the company, the channel and the constraint. The six below are real campaigns with public documentation, from Duolingo's owl to Airbnb's host referral loop.

1. Duolingo on TikTok

As of 2023, Duolingo grew its TikTok account past ten million followers with Duo, its costumed green owl, and a posting cadence closer to a creator than a brand. The parent company, Duolingo Inc., listed on Nasdaq in 2021. The channel job was reach, not conversion.

Measure what Duolingo measured: follower growth, app installs attributed to social, and daily active users. A repeatable character beats a campaign calendar.

2. Oatly's owned controversy

Oatly ran "It's like milk but made for humans" across out-of-home, print and social in 2014, inviting complaints from the dairy industry. The Swedish company printed the resulting legal threats in its own ads. That turned a compliance problem into free distribution. Oatly does not publish a figure for the campaign's direct effect.

The channel job was awareness with a point of view. The constraint was a category where the incumbent owned shelf space. Oatly bought attention by being willing to be disliked, then listed on Nasdaq in 2021.

3. Gymshark's athlete seeding

Gymshark, founded in Birmingham in 2012 by Ben Francis, built its early audience by sending free product to fitness influencers before paying for reach. It later added pop-up events and its own app.

  2. 2013
A few hundred pounds revenue a day
  3. 2020
    Valuation above one billion pounds
  4. 2020
    General Atlantic buys minority stake

As of 2020, revenue grew from a few hundred pounds a day in 2013 to a valuation above one billion pounds, when General Atlantic bought a minority stake.

The channel job was credibility. The constraint was a category dominated by established sportswear. Seeding works when the athlete's audience matches your buyer, not when the follower count is largest. The FTC's native advertising guide requires advertising to be identifiable as advertising in context.

4. Notion's template community

Notion let users publish and sell templates built on its product. Those creators became the acquisition channel, and Notion's own marketing amplified them. The company also ran a student ambassador program, Notion Campus Leaders, on the same logic.

As of 2024, paid seats run about $10 per seat per month billed annually, and the free plan covers personal use. That price sets how many template creators a paid seat has to outproduce.

The channel job was product-led acquisition. The constraint was a crowded productivity market where features alone do not differentiate. The digital marketing strategy development behind it started from the user's own output.

5. Dollar Shave Club's launch video

Dollar Shave Club's 2012 launch video cost roughly $4,500 and, by the company's account, drew about 12,000 orders in its first 48 hours, enough to strain fulfilment. Founder Michael Dubin starred in it. The channel job was direct response. The constraint was a razor market where Gillette owned retail. Unilever bought the company in 2016 for $1 billion.

The video worked because it named the price problem out loud. It did not work because it was cheap. Cheap production with a weak argument is just cheap production.

6. Airbnb's host referral loop

Airbnb grew supply and demand together through referrals, Craigslist cross-posting and a free host photography program. The two-sided constraint meant neither side could be bought independently. The company measured nights booked, not signups, and still reports nights and experiences booked each quarter. Airbnb reported about 99 million nights and experiences booked in the fourth quarter of 2023.

That is also the shape of good digital lead generation: capture suitable demand, route it fast, and judge it on completed exchanges rather than raw form fills.

Choose by constraint

For each example, write down the customer decision. Also write the channel role, the proof used, the destination, and the qualified outcome. Then write the review period. A named campaign gives you a testable hypothesis. It never gives you a forecast.

Start with one journey and a maximum acceptable loss. Compare downstream customer quality and operating burden before you copy anything.

W3C's accessible tables tutorial explains how header and data cells relate for assistive technology. The NIST Privacy Framework starting guide describes a voluntary process for identifying and managing privacy risk.

The W3C information and relationships explanation says visual structure should also be programmatically available. Settle your common digital marketing strategy questions about budget and attribution before you copy a channel mix.

Common questions

Are these real campaigns?

Yes. Each company named above ran the campaign described, and the details are drawn from public reporting and the companies' own accounts. What you cannot copy is the timing, the market conditions or the budget.

Why does the article not give conversion figures?

Most of these companies never published per-channel conversion rates, and inventing them would make the article useless. Where a figure is public, such as the Dollar Shave Club video cost or Gymshark's valuation, it is stated. Where it is not, the article gives you the metric to track instead.

Can I run the same channel plan?

You can run similar channels. Your customer decision, proof, economics and operating capacity differ, so your mix should too. Start with one journey and a maximum acceptable loss before you scale anything.
